Enhanced Conversions for WooCommerce

Quick answer: The wizard's "Enhanced Conversions" checkbox doesn't currently change your container - it's collected but not yet acted on by the generator. Here's the manual setup: enable Enhanced Conversions in Google Ads, then turn on "Include user-provided data from your website" in GTM's Google Ads Conversion tag settings and map it to hashed customer data.

Build my container →

Enhanced Conversions sends hashed first-party customer data - typically email and phone - alongside a conversion, so Google Ads can match conversions to ad clicks more reliably than cookies alone allow, especially given growing cookie and tracking restrictions.

Not yet automated here. This checkbox exists in the wizard but the generator doesn't act on it yet - it's on the roadmap. Until then, here's how to do it manually after importing your container.

Manual setup steps

  1. In Google Ads, turn on Enhanced Conversions for the relevant conversion action (Google Ads → Conversions → your conversion → Enhanced Conversions settings).
  2. In GTM, open your Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag and enable "Include user-provided data from your website."
  3. Point it at variables holding the customer's email/phone at the moment of conversion - usually captured from WooCommerce's order confirmation page or checkout form fields via a data layer variable or DOM element variable.
  4. GTM automatically hashes this data (SHA-256) before sending it - you don't need to hash it yourself.
  5. Verify in GTM Preview mode that the conversion tag shows the enhanced conversion data being sent, then check the Diagnostics tab in Google Ads a few hours after your first real conversions.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't the wizard do this automatically yet?

Enhanced Conversions needs to reliably locate customer email/phone data in your specific checkout flow, which varies more between WooCommerce setups than standard ecommerce events do. It's a planned improvement, not a permanent gap.

Do I need to hash the email/phone data myself?

No - GTM's built-in Enhanced Conversions feature handles hashing automatically once you enable it on the tag and point it at the right data.

Does this apply to GA4 as well as Google Ads?

GA4 has its own separate "user_data" event/measurement for similar matching. It uses a different setup than the Google Ads Conversion tag's Enhanced Conversions toggle described above.
